The counseling approach I offer includes the optional use of the Creative Arts to help clients gain a much needed perspective and assists them in their healing.
"Creative Art Therapy with Lucy Barbera helped my kids successfully navigate a stressful time in their lives. Lucy's presence is attentive, inspiring, and calming. Through creative art therapy she helps her clients to grow in self-confidence and self-understanding. My 'Aspie' kids eagerly look forward to Sandplay Therapy, sculpting monsters in clay, and other creative, nonjudgmental therapy sessions with Lucy."
Sandplay Therapy helps children express what words alone cannot. It is particularly helpful for use with traumatized children, because the process requires no prior art-making/image-making experience. As play is the language of the child, the Sandplay therapy figures are a familiar medium for children and they eagerly participate with little to no prompting. Looking at the figures and the placement that the child constellates in the Sand Tray, the astute clinician can access, symbolically, what the child's inner experience is like, including its conflicts, hopes, dreams and strengths. The sensory and elemental nature of the sand adds a tactile experience that assists in adding relaxation and peace to the experience for the child. This video tells more about how Sandplay Therapy helps to mitigate the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences and why the process of sand play is healing and comforting to children.
Making meaning in times of change, uncertainty, separation, divorce, retirement, serious medical diagnosis, depression, relocation, crisis, and for families with children with special needs. I welcome the opportunity to work creatively with people of all ages, races, cultures, and diverse orientations interested in their own growth and healing.
Some of the media used include paint, college, clay, mask-making, and creative writing to help clients express, understand, and transform their feelings into allies on their path to healing. The focus of my work is with children and adults dealing with emotional and life threatening challenges, relationship issues, emotional, cognitive, or physical challenges, including families in crisis. I utilize SandPlay Therapy and Creative Arts Therapy with both children and adults. Other issues include trauma, death, dying, autism spectrum.
